I'm sure mitchr will be glad that after waiting three and a half years someone finally cleared that up for him.

    Personally I like Ed's Red.

      Re: Gun cleaner

I don't have any nickel plated guns; so other than attacking the copper base underneath nickel-plating, is there any other reason not to use an ammonia based copper remover inside the bore of handguns?

Copper Removers in order of effectiveness:

      1. Barnes CR-10 Copper Remover
      2. Sweet's 7.62 Copper Remover
      3. Bore Shine

I know there's many others, but the Barnes works the quickest for me.

        Will remove copper?

In regard to ammonia & nickle, I would think that anything which is known to remove copper would be bad for the nickle finish, if it gets to the copper coat under the nickle.

Hoppe's Elite cleaner will not hurt nickel and cleans well.

Ammonia (ammonium hydroxide) should not be used on nickel, copper or its alloys (brass and bronze). Hoppe's Elite does not contain ammonia.

              Re: Gun cleaner

For the past several years, I have used a non-chlorinated brake cleaner, the old fashion home made version of ED's Red and Finish Line Dry Teflon Lube.

                Hot off the presses,

Just so you know brake cleaner WILL melt the grips on a Phoenix HP-22.

                Do trust me on this.

To each their own. But I like keeping it simple when it comes to cleaners and lube. Hoppe's Elite to clean, a light coat of BreakFree CLP then maybe some Hoppe's Oil or Tetra Gun Grease. After all, it's not rocket science.

If your aim is simple, why a clp and then oil?

I put the CLP on then about 6 days later a few drops of oil on the rails. Just to keep it really slick and ready. I don't have oil dripping from the gun.
